Martinez: Alcaraz is a commanding figure

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has claimed that new recruit Antolin Alcaraz is at the peak of his career.

Martinez, who last month took the reins from David Moyes at Goodison Park, was re-united with the 30-year-old on Tuesday as Alcaraz joined Everton having worked together at Wigan Athletic, where the duo won the FA Cup last season.

The defender signed a two-year deal on a free transfer and Martinez believes Everton have secured a transfer coup.

“Antolin is a very experienced footballer,” he told the club s official website.

At his age, he is a commanding figure, a real leader within himself with really high standards.

“He s an exciting prospect and we ve been fortunate enough to get him at the end of his contract so as a free transfer, he s going to be a very important addition at the back.

Alcaraz spent three years at Wigan after joining from Club Brugge in 2010, but started only eight Premier League games last season due to injury problems.

The arrival of the Paraguay international marks Martinez s third signing in two days as he secured the services of Arouna Kone from Wigan and Joel Robles from Atletico Madrid, the latter spending time on loan at the DW Stadium last season.
